Smart System Select

The internal platform that replaced Excel-based brake configuration at Knorr-Bremse, a 35,000-person industrial company.

Role
Sole developer: requirements, architecture, implementation and deployment end to end. Embedded in the braking systems division, gathering requirements directly from mechanical engineers.

Knorr-Bremse makes braking systems and employs around 35,000 people. Inside the braking systems division, engineers configured brake test cases in spreadsheets: 20 to 60 minutes of manual work per case, with the version-control and manual-error problems that come with spreadsheet-based configuration. Smart System Select replaces that workflow with an internal web platform. Building a test case now takes under five minutes.

The system models 20 to 40 configuration parameters against a catalogue of 1,000+ components, calipers and EHUs among them. I am the sole developer: I own requirements, architecture, implementation and the deployment to the internal server on every release.

I sit in the braking systems division rather than a software team, so requirements come directly from the mechanical engineers who use the tool. Rollout to engineering teams in Munich, Krakow and Hungary is planned for Q4 2026.
